THE PROBLEM OF SIN IN ANCIENT ISRAEL

The problem of sin in Ancient Israel was carefully noted. The problem of sin was not confined to Israel. Sin continues to express itself in similar ways today.

THE EXPRESSIONS OF SIN

Isaiah 9 noted the following sins that plagued Israel:

  1. Pride and arrogance of heart     Isaiah 9:9
  1. No repentance and turning to God     Isaiah 9:13
  1. Grave errors     Isaiah 9:16
  1. Hypocrisy     Isaiah 9:17c
  1. Doing evil     Isaiah 9:17d
  1. Great folly     Isaiah 9:17e
  1. Wickedness     Isaiah 9:18

THE ANGER OF THE LORD

God had sent many prophets to Israel. But the people had turned a deaf ear. They refused to listen. They rejected the prophets and their messages.

There came a solemn word that was repeated three times:

For all this His anger is not turned away,

But His hand is stretched out still.     Isaiah 9:12,17, 21

  1. Sin that is unrepented of results in God’s anger
  1. That anger will not be easily turned away
  1. Hence this word of warning was given

THE RESULTS OF GOD’S ANGER

The results are sobering. They need to be given careful attention.

  1. Adversaries were sent against Israel     Isaiah 9:11
  1. The Lord would destroy the foolish leaders that led people astray     Isaiah 9:15-16
  1. He takes no joy in the younger generation     Isaiah 9:17

THE LORD’S ANSWER

Yet, the LORD showed great grace and mercy to Israel and to the world. His answer was the giving of His Son to be our Saviour and Ruler.

For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of His government and peace

There will be no end,

Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,

To order it and establish it with judgment and justice

From that time forward, even forever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.     Isaiah 9:6-7

Let our hearts treasure the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Ruler. Let us seek to love the Lord as He deserves!
