(I) INTRODUCTION OF THE MESSIAH-SERVANT

“Behold! My Servant whom I uphold,
My Elect One in whom My soul delights!
I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.” Isaiah 42:1

1. He is introduced as a “Servant”

2. He is upheld by the Lord

3. He has the anointing of God’s Spirit upon Him

(II) IMPORTANT SIMILARITIES

Between Israel and the Messiah Servant

1. Israel is also called “servant”

“But you, Israel, are My servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen, The descendants of Abraham, My friend.” Isaiah 41:8

2. Israel is also upheld by the Lord

“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am Your God.
I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

“Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, And all the remnant of the house of Israel,
Who have been upheld by Me from birth; Who have been carried from the womb” Isaiah 46:3

3. Israel is promised the outpouring of the Spirit

“For I will pour water on him who is thirsty,
And floods on the dry ground;
I will pour My Spirit on your descendants,
And My blessing on your offspring” Isaiah 44:3

(III) IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES

Israel the servant versus The Messiah-Servant

1. With reference to character

“He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,
Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.” Isaiah 42:2

2. With reference to justice

“A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench;
He will bring forth justice for truth.” Isaiah 42:3

3. With reference to His sense of purpose as God’s servant

“He will not fail nor be discouraged,
Till He has established justice in the earth;
And the coastlands shall wait for His law.” Isaiah 42:4

(IV) COMMENDATION OF THE MESSIAH-SERVANT

1. With a great sense of pride

“Behold! My servant…” Isaiah 42:1a

2. With a great sense of joy

“…My Elect One in whom My soul delights…” Isaiah 42:1
