She was made straight and glorified God
Text: Luke 13:10-17
30 November 2008
(I) A LONG SPELL OF SUFFERING
“And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up.” Luke 13:11
“…this woman…being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has bound – think of it – for eighteen years…” Luke 13:16
1. A physical ailment
2. Ailment caused by Satan
3. A long spell of suffering- 18 years!
(II) THE HEALING OF THE WOMAN
1. Woman attended the synagogue (Luke 13:12)
2. She attended despite her obvious difficulty
3. Commended as “a daughter of Abraham” (Luke 13:16)
4. She was instantly healed
“And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight…” Luke 13:13
5. Appropriate response
“…and glorified God.” Luke 13:13
a) No grumbling about how much she had suffered
b) Just deep gratitude
c) Glorifying God
i) For Jesus
ii) For her healing
iii) For the new-found faith
iv) For a new lease of life
(III) NEGATIVE RESPONSE OF THE RULER OF THE SYNAGOGUE
“But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and he said to the crowd, ‘There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.” Luke 13:14
1. Indignation
2. Arrogance
3. Harsh and uncalled for criticism
a) Of the woman
b) Of Jesus
4. Self-righteousness
a) Display of knowledge of the law
b) Seemingly upholding the Sabbath law
(IV) THE REBUKE OF RULER OF THE SYNAGOGUE BY JESUS
1. Rebuked for hypocrisy (Luke 13:15)
2. Rebuked for personal and constant violation of the Sabbath (Luke 13:15)
3. Rebuked for having no compassion for the woman who suffered so much (Luke 13:16)
4. Rebuked for not comprehending the significance of the miracle
5. Putting all the adversaries to shame (Luke 13:17)
(V) REJOICING OF THE MULTITUDES
“And all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him” Luke 13:17
1. Rejoicing
2. Recognizing the worth of the glorious things Jesus did
