INTRODUCTION

a) The names of God
i) Instruction
ii) Illumination
iii) Inspiration
b) Relating to God
i) Many titles of God were employed
ii) Many reasons why this was done
iii) Relating to God in many ways

3. Common Problems

a) We do not relate to God much
b) We do not know how to relate to God well

THE NAMES OF GOD

God is known by many names/titles. Much may be learned about God and relating to Him as we know Him better! This is not about theological knowledge, but personal experiences with the LORD!

1. LORD
(Psalm 3:1, 3, 7, 8
Psalm 4:3)

a) A title frequently used
b) This was the name God said Israel would know Him by
(Exodus 6:1-8)
i) God Almighty (The patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob)
ii) LORD (The children of Israel)
c) What this name represents:
i) He is the Covenant God of His people
ii) He is God and Lord
iii) He will provide
iv) He will protect
v) He is their faithful God
But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly;
The LORD will hear when I call to Him. (Psalm 4:3)

2. God of my righteousness
(Psalm 4:1
Psalm 18:28-32)

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have relieved me in my distress;
Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. (Psalm 4:1)

a) God as the Righteous One
i) As the One who would justify and give righteousness
ii) As the Righteous God who has granted relief in times of distress
b) God as the Giver of light (Psalm 18:28)
i) He will light our lamp
ii) He will give light in the darkness
c) God as the Giver of Truth (Psalm 18:30)
i) His way is perfect
ii) His word is proven

3. My King and my God

Psalm 24:8-10)

Give ear to my words, O LORD,
Consider my meditation.
Give heed to the voice of my cry,
My King and my God;
For to You I will pray. (Psalm 5:1-2)

a) Prayer to the LORD as King
i) The Ruler
ii) The One with the Power and Authority
iii) The One who will hear the cries of His subjects
b) Prayer to the LORD as God
i) He is God in all His glory and Majesty
ii) He is God and not Man
iii) He is God in every sense of the word

RELATING TO GOD

3. Categories of these Manifold aspects

a) God as the Giver of strength in answer to our need for it (Psalm 18:1-2)
i) Strength is found in God
ii) It has to be sought in prayer
iii) It was found time and again
iv) Grateful love for the LORD for being that great source of strength
v) This is natural and appropriate
b) God as our Protector from the dangers of life
i) Rock
ii) Fortress
iii) Shield
iv) Stronghold
c) God as our Saviour/Deliverer rescuing us from difficulties of life
i) Deliverer
ii) Horn of our salvation

APPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIP RESPONSES

1. Love
“I will love You, O LORD.” (Psalm 18:1)

2. Trust
“In whom I will trust.” (Psalm 18:2)

3. Call

“I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies.” (Psalm 18:3)

“In my distress I called upon the LORD,
And cried out to my God;
He heard my voice from His temple,
And my cry came before Him, even to His ears” (Psalm 18:6)
