MY MOUTH SHALL SHOW FORTH YOUR PRAISE
Text: Psalm 51
15 May 2011
(I) SIN RESTRAINS US FROM GIVING PRAISE
1. It causes us not to relate to the Lord…nothing to praise God for (in our eyes)
2. It makes us distance ourselves from God…don’t feel like praising Him
3. It dries us up spiritually…can’t praise Him
4. It takes away the joy that was once in our life…no more praise
(II) THE RECOGNITION OF THE INSIDIOUS NATURE OF SIN
1. Recognition of how sin would always make us feel guilty
“For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.” Psalm 51:3
2. Ultimately our sin is against the Lord
“Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge.” Psalm 51:4
3. Born with sin
“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.” Psalm 51:5
4. The depth of sin
“Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.” Psalm 51:6
(III) THE REMOVAL OF SIN
1. God to show mercy
“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies,” Psalm 51:1
2. God to blot our sins
“Blot out my transgressions.” Psalm 51:1
“Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.” Psalm 51:9
3. God to wash and cleanse us
a) Thorough cleansing
“Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.” Psalm 51:2
b) Whiter than snow
“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Psalm 51:7
c) Creation of a clean heart
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
4. God to deliver us from our guilt
“Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation,” Psalm 51:14
(IV) THE RESTORATION OF OUR JOY
1. From brokenness to joy
“Make me hear joy and gladness, that the bones You have broken may rejoice.” Psalm 51:8
2. Restoring of the joy of the Lord’s salvation
“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit.” Psalm 51:12
(V) THE RETURN TO PRAISING GOD
1. We can sing again
“And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.” Psalm 51:14
2. Praise should come forth from our mouth
“O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.” Psalm 51:15
3. Offering the right sacrifices to God
“For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.” Psalm 51:16,17
