I will not forget Your word
Text: Psalm 119:1-16
1 June 2008
(I) ADMONITION NOT TO FORGET
1. The mighty deeds of God
“Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life…” Deuteronomy 4:9 (Cf. Deuteronomy 6:12)
2. The Covenant of God
“Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a carved image…” Deuteronomy 4:23
3. The commandments of God
“Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today” Deuteronomy 8:11
(II) THE FACT OF FORGETTING GOD AND HIS WORD
1. Prophecy against Damascus
“Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation,
And have not been mindful of the Rock of your stronghold…” Isaiah 17:10
2. Prophecy against Judah
“Can a virgin forget her ornaments Or a bride her attire?
Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number.” Jeremiah 2:32
3. Prophecy concerning Israel
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge,
Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also will reject you from being priest to Me;
Because you have forgotten the law of your God I will also forget your children.” Hosea 4:6
(III) WHEREIN LIES THE DANGER OF FORGETTING GOD?
1. It could result in departure from God (Deuteronomy 4:9)
2. It could lead to idolatrous practices (Deuteronomy 4:23)
3. It could lead to destruction (Hosea 4:6)
(IV) BATTLING THE PROBLEM OF FORGETTING GOD
1. Understanding God’s command
“You have commanded us to keep Your precepts diligently” Psalm 119:4
2. Dealing with the problem of sin
“How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.” Psalm 119:9
3. Practical and Positive steps taken
a) Deep Desire to walk in God’s way
“Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes!” Psalm 119:5
b) Every effort made to hide God’s word in the heart
“Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.” Psalm 119:11
c) Setting aside time to Meditate on God’s word
“I will meditate on Your precepts
And contemplate Your ways.” Psalm 119:15
d) Determination to never forget God’s word
“I will delight myself in Your statutes:
I will not forget Your word.” Psalm 119:16
