Dear Parents,
THE USE OF THE BOOK OF PROVERBS IN PARENTING
As we take time to study the Book of Proverbs, and learn precious lessons about how we can become better parents, let us bear in mind the following thoughts:-
1. The Book of Proverbs by itself is NOT ENOUGH
Let us bear in mind that the Book of Proverbs is only one book out of the total 66 books in the Bible! To attempt to bring up your children based only on one book would be a most foolish and unnecessary mistake!
2. The WHOLE BIBLE must be sought
When we entitled this Webpage, Parenting By The Book, we refer to the whole Bible, and not just the book of Proverbs!
3. The obvious areas that are lacking in the Book of Proverbs
The Book of Proverbs does not teach some very vital doctrines found elsewhere in the Scriptures. Two very important truths that are missing in the Book of Proverbs are highlighted:-
a) It does not teach us about how the Lord Jesus must come into the life of children.
b) It does not teach us about how the Spirit of God must do His work in sanctifying children.
READING THE SCRIPTURES AS A THEOLOGICAL WHOLE
It is important that we learn how to read the Scriptures as a theological treatise. It is wrong and dangerous to read and apply Bible verses out of context! The Scriptures are a well-integrated whole. The Old Testament and the New Testament are to be read together.
It is not easy to read the Scriptures in this manner. However, having said that, we must not think that this is an impossible task. It would take wisdom, and perseverance to attempt to read the Scriptures with great comprehension.
THE VALUE OF THE BOOK OF PROVERBS
What then is the value of the Book of Proverbs? Let us consider the following thoughts:-
1. The Book of Proverbs is made up of wise sayings culled from observations of life.
2. These sayings may actually be classified under different categories.
3. These sayings must be read as a unit, since they are related.
4. The Book of Proverbs by itself may not teach you the actual skills of parenting. That would come when you prayerfully and diligently practise your parenting skills.
5. The Book of Proverbs does not GUARANTEE that a child would grow up perfectly!
Let us ever read the Scriptures with great humility!
