Text: Proverbs 11
19 January 2003

Dear Parents,

THE SIN OF PRIDE
Pride is not an easy sin to eradicate. Even as adults, we find it hard to overcome the problem of pride. Children can pick up this sin of pride quite easily. How important it is that we nip the sin of pride in the bud. When sin is dealt with early in life, we have a higher chance of defeating it.

When pride comes, then comes shame;
But with the humble is wisdom.

Proverbs 11:2

HOW IS “SHAME” RELATED TO THE SIN OF “PRIDE?”
When a person is filled with pride, it may cause him:-

1. To boast

2. To be conceited

3. To exalt self

Pride causes a person to exaggerate things. The reality of life often causes the proud person to be ashamed. There are others who are far superior in more ways than one. Shame is the destiny of all who indulge in the sin of pride.

THE PLACE OF HUMILITY
The person who chooses the path of humility is much wiser by far. He is mindful of the fact that he must:-

1. Exercise control of his feelings and thoughts.

2. Accept that in life there would always be people who are better than self.

3. Have a more realistic appreciation of self.

Through exercising these things, the humble gains true wisdom in life.

DEALING WITH THE SIN OF PRIDE
How do we deal with the problem of pride? Consider some of these practical things we can do.

1. Teach CONTENTMENT

Contentment must not be mistaken for complacency. Contentment is being happy and satisfied with what one has.

2. Teach HEALTHY RESPECT FOR OTHERS

When there is a proper regard for others, the sin of pride takes a back seat. This does not mean that a child cannot excel in life.

Where there is healthy regard for others, pride cannot take root. Unfortunately, the sin of pride cannot be totally eradicated. Too many areas of life has been tainted by this sin. We can only pray humbly for God’s grace to deal with this troublesome sin.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
