Text: Proverbs 14
25 May 2003

Dear Parents,

THE PROBLEM OF LYING
This subject was mentioned before. Let us take time to review some of the statements mentioned in earlier texts.

A false witness who speaks lies…

Proverbs 6:19

And we have this text that highlights the problem of lying.

… a false witness will utter lies.

Proverbs 14:5

These texts serve as an important reminder that the sin of lying is listed as one of the seven terrible sins that God particularly hates.

These six things the LORD hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him.

Proverbs 6:16

And one of these abominable things that God hates is the sin of lying (Proverbs 6:17 “a lying tongue”).

THE DILEMMA OF THE SCOFFER
The scoffer may disdain knowledge. However, truth to tell, he is at a loss as to how he may acquire knowledge and wisdom.

A scoffer seeks wisdom and does not find it,
But knowledge is easy to him who understands.

Proverbs 14:6

The scoffer may pretend that he is not interested in the search for wisdom. However, secretly he wishes with all his heart that he could find wisdom. However, since he has disdained wisdom in the past, he finds to his horror that he is now unable to obtain wisdom. Deep knowledge now eludes him. Let us be reminded of a text we read earlier.

Then they will call on me, but I will not answer,
They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
Because they hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the LORD;
They would have none of my counsel
And despised my every rebuke.
Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
And be filled to the full with their own fancies.

Proverbs 1:28-31

May we always be reminded to treasure knowledge and wisdom.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
