Text: Proverbs 14
23 June 2003

Dear Parents,

OUR CHILDREN’S VALUE SYSTEM
Our children are quite capable of thinking their own thoughts. They can even come up with their own value system. For example,

1. They may choose the path of lying because they think that can get them out of trouble.

2. They choose deception if they think they can get away with it.

3. They can choose the path of wickedness and start to bully others who are smaller in size.

A NEED TO PROVIDE A BIBLICAL FRAME OF REFERENCE
We know that our children are quite capable of the above mentioned. We sometimes catch ourselves disciplining them for engaging in wrong practices. How can we help them better? Let us pay close heed to this proverb.

There is a way that seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.

Proverbs 14:12

1. Personal Value system

Our children need to understand themselves. They must realize that they may already have concocted their own value system.

2. A Biblical Value system

Teach them how to evaluate their value system. Tell them that there is a Biblical value system which they would do well to take heed of.

3. Warn them of the danger of having a wrong system

a) A system that may seem so right can end up disastrously.

b) A system that may seem right can lead to death!

4. Value systems must be personally built

You cannot build the value system for your children. They must build it themselves.

THE ULTIMATE TEST- LIFE ITSELF
Is there a test that can be applied to check out a value system? Yes, but that test is administered by life itself! Let us teach our children to build a sound personal value system.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
