Text: Proverbs 19
8 May 2005

Dear Parents,

THE DANGER OF IGNORANCE
We recognize the danger of ignorance. The United Nations work very hard to promote literacy! Without literacy, there would be no access to far-reaching knowledge! Ignorance in this day and age is even more disastrous than in the past! The volume of knowledge has literally exploded significantly over the last 50 years especially! Internationally, nationally and personally, no efforts are spared to battle the problem of ignorance!

IGNORANCE OF SPIRITUAL MATTERS
Do we also recognize the danger of ignorance of spiritual matters? Let us take time to ponder this challenging text!

Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge,
and he sins who hastens with his feet.

Proverbs 19:2

“Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge”
This is putting it very gently! The point of this text is obvious! One must strive to obtain knowledge to feed the soul! It is “not good” for the soul to remain famished for food! What are the consequences of a badly-nourished soul?

1. Weakness will result

This is obvious! The soul that is weak cannot hope to survive in a world fraught with evil!

2. Departure from God

This may be one of the consequences of a soul that is not fed with knowledge of God!

“And he sins who hastens with his feet”

When a person lacks spiritual knowledge, he is deprived of a great source of wisdom! What then would he depend on when he has to make decisions in life? The person who lacks knowledge will tend to react first and then think later! When people are hasty in reactions, the danger of sinning is very much higher!

WHAT STEPS ARE WE GOING TO TAKE TO IMPROVE THE INTAKE OF SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE?
There are many things we can do to help our children deepen their spiritual knowledge. Making sure that they attend Sunday School, worship services, etc would go a long way to help them grow stronger in faith! Taking time to talk to our children about the Lord would also encourage and strengthen the faith of our children! If we recognize the importance of academic knowledge for our children, let us also acknowledge the necessity to give knowledge to the souls of our children!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
