Text: Proverbs 20
6 November 2005

Dear Parents,

RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY
One of the wisest things that we must desire our children to learn is a proper regard for authority. In ancient days, authority resided in “the king”.

The wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion;
Whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life.

Proverbs 20:2

1. “The wrath of a king”

When is the wrath of the king provoked? The following situations may indeed provoke the king’s anger!

a) The flouting of the laws of the land

Laws are not easy things to live with! Many feel that their “freedom” is curbed because of the laws promulgated by the king! Thus the eternal struggle between king and subject commences!

Ultimately, the laws of the land are flouted flagrantly! And no matter how tolerant the king may be, there will come a time when he can abide those who flout the law no more! His wrath would then be displayed against the law breakers!

b) The right of the king to exercise authority

The Scriptures clearly teach us that the authority wielded by kings come from the Lord Himself.

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities.
For there is no authority except from God,
and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
Therefore whoever resists the authority resists
The ordinance of God, and those who resist will
bring judgment on themselves.

Romans 13:1-2

This teaching seems very clear-cut! We must endeavour to help our children cultivate an appropriate regard for the authorities of the land!

2. The “roaring of a lion”

The king of the land is well compared to another “king”. The lion is often called “the king of the beasts”. His roar is feared by all. The laws of the king may indeed be likened to the roars of a lion to those who detest his authority. Sometimes, it takes tough laws (“roaring of a lion”) to help the wayward to recognize and respect authority.

BEWARE THE REBELIOUS SPIRIT
The seed of rebellion is unfortunately sown deep in the heart of man! This seed or rebellion will rise up and challenge all forms of authority! Parental, school, government- all forms of authority may be opposed!

In the final analysis, the rebel is the loser! He invites only wrath and judgment to himself! How we must teach our children well! Blessings would be theirs when they learn how to regard authority with due respect!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
