Text: Proverbs 22
28 May 2006

Dear Parents,

TRAINING OUR CHILDREN
How may we describe the work of bringing up our children? The following text gives us an excellent understanding of how we may regard this task.

Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6

Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;
The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

Proverbs 22:15

1. Training

This word has many implications. It is a word that those who are involved in sports would appreciate readily.

b) It also suggests that a child must understand the program and then embrace it.

c) It will mean that corrective measures must be taken at times.

d) It suggests that both coach and trainee (parent and child) work very closely.

e) All training programmes require commitment.

f) Patience and perseverance must be factored in.

g) Unconditional love must always be there.

2. Results

All training programmes are planned with great results in mind. The following are some results that we may look forward to, if we train our children well.

a) The good habits instilled in a child’s heart will last a lifetime.

b) The excellent training he has received will make him outstanding.

i) Even kings will want to befriend him – Proverbs 22:11

ii) He will stand before kings – Proverbs 22:29

iii) He will not stand before unknown men – Proverbs 22:29

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
