Text: Proverbs 23
9 July 2006

Dear Parents,

DANGERS OF BECOMING ADDICTED TO WINE HIGHLIGHTED
The ancient world drank wine as we would drink beverages. Wine was as common then, as water is today. Nevertheless, the dangers of loving wine needed to be highlighted.

GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF THE DANGER OF WINE ADDICTION
We have a very graphic description of the dangers of becoming addicted to drinking wine.

Who has woe?
Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions?
Who has complaints?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has redness of eyes?
Those who linger long at the wine,
Those who go in search of mixed wine.

Proverbs 23:29-30

Those who have a wine addiction problem will face the above. This description most vividly describes those who become addicted to wine.

ANOTHER GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION
We have another text that well illustrates this danger of becoming overly fond of wine.

Do not look on the wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the cup.
When it swirls around smoothly;
At the last it bites like a serpent
And stings like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange things,
And your heart will utter perverse things…
‘They have struck me, but I was not hurt;
They have beaten me, but I did not feel it.
When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?’

Proverbs 23:31-33, 35

Wine will ultimately mock the person who has come to love it. Wine is the most treacherous lover of all. It will humiliate and finally destroy the individual!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
