Text: Proverbs 24
10 September 2006

Dear Parents,

NOTHING TO FRET ABOUT
There are many things that can cause the heart to be fretful. One of the things that cause many to be fretful is the problem of wicked people seemingly gaining the upper hand in life. The following text teaches us not to fret over this matter.

Do not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the wicked;
For there will be no prospect for the evil man;
The lamp of the wicked will be put out.

Proverbs 24:19-20

1. The full context

The full context of the text above is best seen when we compare it with another text in the book of Psalms. (Read Psalm 37 in its entirety for greater understanding.)

… Do not fret because if him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

Psalm 37:7

2. No future for the wicked

The wicked may like to think that he can carry on indefinitely with his wicked ways. He is sadly mistaken.

a) “No prospect for the evil man”

This is a very solemn statement. God will never allow evil to prevail.

b) “The lamp of the wicked will be put out”

In its ultimate application, this is a reference to the termination of life of the wicked.

LEARNING TO TRUST FULLY IN GOD AND HIS WAYS

Psalm 37 offers tremendous words of encouragement. Let us ponder the following texts.

1. With reference to evil doers

Evildoers shall be cut off.

Psalm 37:9a

Yet a little while and the wicked will be no more.

Psalm 37:10

2. With reference to the righteous meek

But the meek shall inherit the earth,
And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Psalm 37:11

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
