Text: Proverbs 25
18 February 2007

Dear Parents,

WHAT WOULD OUR CHILDREN BECOME AS THEY GROW UP?
This is something that many parents are deeply concerned about? These are valid concerns.

1. How would our children cope with life?

2. How would they fare in the working world?

3. How would they turn out with reference to their character?

We would never be a hundred per cent sure how they would turn up actually. But we can do a number of things that would steer them away from ending up with a contentious character.

A CONTENTIOUS PERSONALITY
This character often brings up “knowing smiles”. Let us ponder the following related texts.

It is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop,
Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

Proverbs 25:24; 21:9

Better to dwell in the wilderness,
Than with a contentious and angry woman.

Proverbs 21:19

1. A contentious character is not uncommon

That this proverbial saying should appear a number of times would indicate that this problem is not an isolated one at all. In fact this problem was not uncommon.

2. A contentious character is both feared and shunned

How would people respond to a person who is contentious? The general reaction is one of fear and shunning from such a person.

3. A contentious character often involves the problem of anger

How does a person become contentious? Many factors probably contribute to a person developing such a personality. One of these problems is that of unbridled anger.

CULTIVATING A GOOD PERSONALITY
Let us be challenged to help our children cultivate good personalities. It takes both careful instruction and practice before a good personality can surface.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
