Text: Proverbs 27
1 July 2007

Dear Parents,

BOASTING
Children pick up the habit of boasting very early in life. The forms of “boasting” are numerous.

1. Exaggeration

2. Outright untruth

3. Telling others about their “exploits”

4. Active imagination

Most times, children grow out of that phase of their life as they mature. The problem comes if they are not able to outgrow the problem of boasting.

DANGERS ATTENDING BOASTING
Let us take time to ponder some of the things that attend to the problem of boasting.

Do not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.

Proverbs 27:1

This text is more easily understood when we look at a similar text found in the book of James.

Come now, you who say,
‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city,
spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit.’
Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow.
For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appears
for a little time and then vanishes away.
Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live
And do this or that.’
But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

James 4:13-17

1. Boasting can be a manifestation of arrogance.

2. Boasting can be evil.

3. Boasting about our plans to become successful and rich… is pure folly!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
