Text: Proverbs 28
13 January 2008

Dear Parents,

THE GIFT OF GOD’S LAW
Moses tried very hard to teach Israel how to have the highest regard for God’s word. Let us recall this text from Deuteronomy.

For what great nation is there that has God so near to it,
as the LORD our God is to us…
And what great nation is there that has such statutes and
righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set
before you this day?

Deuteronomy 4:7-8

No other nation on earth has been so blessed and favoured! Only Israel was given the laws of God!

THE DANGER OF DISREGARDING THE LAWS OF GOD
The danger of disregarding the laws of God was very real! The history of Israel reveals a painful fact! The nation had never been fully appreciative of the laws of God. Prophet after prophet was sent to Israel to warn them of the danger of rejecting God’s word, but their words often fell on deaf ears.

ANOTHER WORD OF WARNING
Once again, we have another word of warning about the danger of disregarding God’s word.

One who turns away his ear from hearing the law,
Even his prayer is an abomination.

Proverbs 28:9

1. Turning away his ear

This speaks of a deliberate act on the part of the individual.

2. Hearing of the law

The law was taught by the priests at the Temple. Teachers were to attempt to cause many to hear the law of God.

3. The rejection of the law is not an isolated sin problem

This insight is highlighted in this text!

a) The rejection of the law is in itself wrong and sinful.

b) When a person rejects the word of God, even his prayers to God would be rejected. His prayers would be considered “abomination”. This insight teaches us that God regards the rejection of His word most seriously! Let us teach our children to have the highest regard for the law of God.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
