Text: Proverbs 28
20 April 2008

Dear Parents,

HEINOUS SINS
One of the most heinous sins must be the one described in the text below.

Whoever robs his father or his mother and says,
‘It is no transgression,’
The same is companion to a destroyer.

Proverbs 28:24

THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT
There is no mistaking the clarity and strength of the words in the fifth commandment.

Honour your father and your mother…

Exodus 20:12

THIS PARTICULAR SIN REBUKED BY JESUS
This peculiar problem was actually dealt with by the Lord Jesus. Matthew recorded the way in which Jesus exposed and rebuked the Pharisees for their evil (Matthew 15:1-9).

1. What God had planned originally

a) Children are to honour their parents.

b) They are to take care of them in their old age.

2. What the Pharisees did

a) They came up with a tradition… a human commandment.

b) A person can get away with providing for parents by saying that the funds were given to God as a gift (called “corban”).

c) Since God is greater than man, any gift that has been given as “corban” cannot be given to parents.

d) The perverted individual says to himself that he has not transgressed the commandments of God! (He probably will enjoy the adulation of men when he donates generously.)

A COMPANION OF DESTROYERS
There is no mistaking the word of rebuke given! This wicked son is “a companion of a destroyer”. He is no better than destroyers! His parents will suffer unnecessarily because of his wickedness!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
