Text: Proverbs 29
10 August 2008

Dear Parents,

CORRECTION OF CHILDREN
Children will need correction all the time. No matter how well you may think that they have learned a lesson, soon they will need to be corrected again! But let’s take heart as we meditate on this text.

Correct your son, and he will give you rest;
Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

Proverbs 29:17

1. Remember it is “your son”

a) Sonship suggests a special kinship.

b) There is a special bond here.

c) Much encouragement can be drawn from this strong relationship.

2. Correction

a) There is a short term view.

i) There is little joy here.

ii) There is much discouragement.

b) Consider the long term view.

i) There is great hope in the long term view.

ii) When correction is administered properly.

iii) When there is good and consistent teaching.

iv) When a child learns his lessons well.

v) He will stand corrected and be better off.

c) Encouragement

The child will give rest (“comfort”) to parents in old age. He will bring great delight (and pride) to the hearts of parents! Parenting and correction go together!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
