Text: Proverbs 30
12 October 2008

Dear Parents,

APPRECIATING AGUR’S APPROACH IN WRITING
As we ponder the words of Agur in the following text, we begin to appreciate better why he wrote as he did!

Who has ascended into heaven, or descended?
Who has gathered the wind in His fists?
Who has bound the waters in a garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is His name, and what is His Son’s name,
If you know?

Proverbs 30:4

1. A series of rhetorical questions

a) These questions were essentially rhetorical.

b) Agur was not expecting any answer from anyone.

2. The content of these rhetorical questions

a) Dwelling on the Presence of a very great God

b) Dwelling on God’s Power as Creator

i) Control of the wind

ii) Control of the waters

iii) Establishment of the ends of the earth

c) Dwelling on the Name of God

b) Dwelling on the Name of the Son of God

IN AWE OF A GREAT GOD
Agur stood in great awe of God! This sense of awe caused him to write as he did in his opening text (Proverbs 30:1-3).

a) No one ought to boast about his learning before this great God.

b) Agur teaches us deep lessons about how to stand in awe of this Almighty God!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
