Text: Proverbs 30
26 October 2008

Dear Parents,

TWO SPECIAL PETITIONS
If you were allowed to make only two petitions to the Lord, what would they be? Agur’s two petitions give us a glimpse of the kind of spirit he possessed.

Two things I request of You
(Deprive me not before I die):
Remove falsehood and lies far from me;
Give me neither poverty nor riches-
Feed me with the food allotted to me;
Lest I be full and deny You
And say, ‘Who is the LORD?’
Or lest I be poor and steal,
And profane the name of my God.

Proverbs 30:7-9

1. Petition to remove falsehood and lies

a) No acquaintance with liars

b) No personal guilt of falsehood and lying

2. Petition to be fed with the food God would allot him (sufficiency)

a) No desire for riches

i) Riches can cause a person to deny God.

ii) Riches can corrupt a person spiritually.

b) No desire to be in poverty either

i) Poverty is not portrayed as a virtue.

ii) Poverty can cause a person to sin by stealing.

iii) Poverty can cause a person to profane the name of God.

3. “Deprive me not before I die”

a) A desire to experience an answer from God for the above petitions.

b) A prayer that displays deep wisdom.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
