Text: Proverbs 31
1 February 2009

Dear Parents,

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM KING LEMUEL
Proverbs 31 was the contribution of King Lemuel. The following text bears testimony as to the author of the chapter.

The words of King Lemuel,
the utterance which his mother taught him.

Proverbs 31:1

1. Who is King Lemuel?

Apart from this text which identifies him as a king, we do not know anything else about his identity.

2. Honouring his mother

King Lemuel was well brought up indeed! He refused to take credit for what he had written! He traced the source of his wisdom to his mother! A fine son is one who remembers his parents and the teachings received from them!

THE MOTHER OF KING LEMUEL
The mother of Lemuel had this to say to her son. We may learn much about Lemuel’s mother from this simple text!

What, my son?
And what, son of my womb?
And what, son of my vows?

Proverbs 31:2

1. A close relationship maintained

a) This is observable.

b) This is praise-worthy.

c) Her son was lovingly addressed as “son of my womb”.

2. Committed to instruction of her son

a) She was obviously committed to teaching her son.

b) She must have made a vow concerning his upbringing.

c) Hence she called him “son of my vows”.

d) Her son, destined to be a king, must be given great and wise teachings!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
