THE SYMBOL OF “REST”

1. The Promised Land

a) They shall not enter My rest (Hebrews 3:11)
b) Repeated word (Hebrews 4:3a)

2. The Sabbath

a) The works were finished
before the foundation of the earth (Hebrews 4:3b)
i) A reference to Creation which was planned before the foundation of the earth
ii) God’s plan was completed (finished)
b) God rested on the seventh day (Hebrews 4:4)
i) The Sabbath is a symbol of Rest
ii) But it is not the Eternal Rest (Hebrews 4:5)

3. Why some would not be able to enter into God’s Rest

a) All would like to enter into that Eternal Rest
a) Not all would make it
Because of disobedience (Hebrews 4:6b)

4. A Time Limit

a) He designates a certain day (Hebrews 4:7a)
b) A long time given (Hebrews 4:7b)
c) Time (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)

5. The best time is “Today”

a) Today, if you hear My voice (Hebrews 4:7c)
b) Do not harden your heart (Hebrews 4:7d, Psalm 95:7)

6. Canaan is not the final Rest

a) Joshua led Israel into Canaan (Hebrews 4:8a)
b) There is another day/ another Rest (Hebrews 4:8b)

7. There remains an Eternal Rest (Hebrews 4:9a)

In this Rest, one ceases from life’s work forever (Hebrews 4:9b)

8. Diligence needed

a) The Promise of Rest is not to be taken for granted
b) Diligence is an important feature to note:
i) In listening
ii) In understanding
iii) In believing
iv) In following
