THE DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION

1. The righteousness of God (Romans 3:21)

a) This is a foundational truth
b) The righteousness of God is revealed in the Scriptures
c) The law and the prophets (a reference to the Scriptures)
d) The law and the prophets bear witness of this great truth

2. Apart from the law (Romans 3:21)

a) The righteousness of God is imputed “apart from the law”
b) The deeds of the law cannot bring justification

3. The righteousness of God obtained (Romans 3:22)

a) Through faith in Jesus Christ
b) To all who believe
c) There is no difference (between Jew and Greek)
d) All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)

4. Justification from God (Romans 3:24)

a) God imputes righteousness to all who believe in Jesus
b) God justifies freely (as a gift)
c) By His grace
d) Through the redemption in Christ Jesus

5. The role of Christ Jesus (Romans 3:25)

a) He is our propitiation
b) His blood had to be shed

6. The role of faith (Romans 3:25)

a) Faith must be exercised
b) Faith in the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ

7. God’s mercy shown (Romans 3:26)

a) Forbearance of God
b) He passed over our sins

8. What is being demonstrated? (Romans 3:26)

a) God is righteous
b) He is just
c) He is also the Justifier of the one who believes in Jesus Christ

9. Conclusion (Romans 3:27-31)

a) No one can boast of his justification (salvation) (Romans 3:27)
i) Not be knowledge of the law
ii) Nor by the deeds of the law
b) Justification
i) Not possible through the deeds of the law (Romans 3:28)
ii) Only through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:28)

i) He is God of the Jews
ii) He is also God of the Gentiles (Romans 3:29)
iii) Only one God
iv) He justifies the circumcised by faith (Romans 3:30)
v) He justifies the uncircumcised through faith (Romans 3:30)
d) Is the law made void?
i) No!
ii) The law is established!
iii) God’s plan for justification was revealed in the law (Romans 3:31)
