C. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANT DOCTRINES OF OUR NEW FAITH-LIFE IN CHRIST
1. The Doctrine of the New Man
And have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of
Him who created him.Colossians 3:10
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was
created according to God, in true righteousness and holinessEphesians 4:23-24
a) Renewed (anakainoo renew, remake Colossians 3:10)
b) Knowledge (epignosis – suggestion: deep knowledge Colossians 3:10)
c) According to image of Him (kat’ eikona- made after Christ’s image)
d) Renewed (ananeoo renew, rejuvenate Ephesians 4:23)
e) Spirit of your mind (to pneumatic tou noos- mind as spirit Ephesians 4:23)
f) Put on the new man (endusasthai – The use of the infinitive to suggest purpose Ephesians 4:22.
2. The Doctrine of our new life in Christ Romans
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord

3. The Doctrine of our Victory over the Problem of sin Romans 6-7
a) The power of sin

But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner
Of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.
I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived

vi) Sin’s power to deceive
For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me,
And by it, killed me.Romans 7:11
viii) The nature of sin revealed
Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might
Appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through

ix) The problem of human carnality
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

x) The problem of sin’s deadly indwelling influence
But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will
Is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not do,
That I practise.
Now if I do what I will not do, it is no longer I who do it,
But sin that dwells in me.Romans 7:17-20
xi) The law of sin
I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good.
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind,
And bringing into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.Romans 7:21, 23
xii) The wretched feelings that sin brings
O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

b) Power over sin
i) Identification with Christ’s death
Baptised into His death
Romans 6:3
ii) Identification with Christ’s resurrection
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death,
That just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so
We also should walk in newness of lifeRomans 6:4
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly

iii) Reckon self dead to sin
Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin…

But alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it

vi) Present self to God
And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin,
But present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members

vii) Become a bond-slave to God
But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God,
You have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.Romans 6:22
viii) Delight in the law of God
For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man

I thank God- through Jesus Christ our Lord! So than, with the mind I myself
Serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.Romans 7:25
4. The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit Romans 8
a) Learning to walk in the Spirit
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not
walk according to the flesh, but according to the SpiritRomans 8:1
Who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit
Romans 8:4b
i) No condemnation even if we falter and fail many times
ii) We are in Christ Jesus… justified… redeemed… reconciled
iii) Walking according to the Spirit
b) The law of the Spirit of life in Christ
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and
deathRomans 8:2
i) Law of the Spirit
ii) Law of the new life we have in Christ Jesus
iii) Law of the Spirit liberates us from the law of sin and death
iv) This law is more powerful than the law of sin and death
c) Setting the mind on the things of the Spirit
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh,
But those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.Romans 8:5-6
i) Setting the mind on things of the flesh
ii) Setting the mind on things of the Spirit
ii) Spiritual mindedness
d) The indwelling of the Holy Spirit
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.Romans 8:9
i) Theological significance of the Spirit’s indwelling
ii) He is the Seal and Guarantee of our salvation Ephesians 1:13-14
e) The generation of life by the Spirit
And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of
righteousness.
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised
Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who
dwells in you.Romans 8:10-11
i) The Spirit of God will generate new life in the believer
ii) The “new life” in Christ should be different from the “old life”
f) The challenge to live by the Spirit
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if you live by the Spirit you put to
death the deeds of the body, you will live.Romans 8:13
i) Living according to the flesh- death
ii) Living according to the Spirit- life
g) The promise of the Spirit’s leading
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God
Romans 8:14
i) Led by the Spirit of God
ii) Led as sons of God
h) The role of the Spirit of God in teaching us to relate to God as Father
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of
adoption by whom we cry out Abba, Father,
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of GodRomans 8:15-16
i) No more in bondage to fear God
ii) Establishment of a loving relationship with God as Father
iii) The Spirit of God bears witness of this new relationship
i) The Spirit of God helps us in our weaknesses
Likewise the Spirit also helps us in our weaknesses.
For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes
intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He
makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.Romans 8:26-27
i) Human weakness is all too obvious
ii) We don’t know how to pray very well!
iii) The Spirit intercedes for us effectively
iv) He prays for the saints according to the will of God
