OVERVIEW OF LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE IN THE DAYS OF MOSES
1. Moses’ Role as the National Leader
a) Teacher
b) Intercessor
c) Prophet
2. The Religious System
a) The Priests (Exodus 28-29; 40:12-15)
b) The Levites (Numbers 3-4)
i) Gershon
ii) Kohath
iii) Merari Numbers 3:17
c) Other leaders
i) Aaron
ii) Miriam
d) Special leaders
i) Bezalel the son of Uri…
Filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship Exodus 31:3
ii) Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach…
I have appointed with him Aholiab… Exodus 31:6
iii) All the gifted artisans
I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the gifted artisans… Exodus 31:6
3. The Military system
a) Tribal chiefs Deuteronomy 1; Numbers 13-14
i) Twelve choice young men were chosen to spy out the land
ii) They were given the opportunity to lead Israel to conquer the land
iii) Ten of them feared the odds; they caused Israel to rebel against God’s command
iv) Only Joshua and Caleb proved themselves worthy of leadership
b) Joshua was later appointed overall head Deuteronomy 3:28
4. Tribal heads
These were appointed. However their leadership was not outstanding. Their contribution was not
noticeable.
a) Leaders of thousands
b) Leaders of hundreds
c) Leaders of fifties
d) Leaders of tens
5. A Special Set of Leaders appointed Numbers 11
a) Special anointing of the Spirit
b) Unique spiritual gift (prophecy)
c) Seventy “elders” were appointed to assist Moses in his ministry
AN APPRECIATION OF PRACTICAL LEADERSHIP
1. We serve best where we are most qualified or talented
2. We will be tested in the areas of responsibility entrusted to us
3. We must prove ourselves faithful
4. The danger of failing as a leader is very real
5. Success in leadership is never guaranteed; the leader must constantly be up to the mark
