Watchmen

Text: Isaiah 62

1. The Concept of the Watchmen

I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem;
They shall never hold their peace day or night.
You who make mention of the LORD, do not keep silent,

And give him no rest till He establishes,
And till He makes Jerusalem a praise on the earth.
Isaiah 62:6-7

a) Major cities were surrounded by a high wall to protect the residents

b) These walls had special stations where watchmen were positioned

c) Their role was to keep watch, day and night

d) If enemies were seen they were to raise the alarm

e) The city would then be saved from surprise attacks

2. The concept of Spiritual watchmen

a) They are appointed to watch over Jerusalem and the nation

b) Their role is to cry out to the Lord when they see enemies approaching

c) Their role is in the realm of prayer

d) They must faithfully discharge their duties until God has established His plans (for Jerusalem)

3. The Example of the Messiah

For Zion’s sake I will not hold My peace,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,
Until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
And her salvation as a lamp that burns.

The Gentiles shall see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory;
You shall be called by a new name,
Which the mouth of the LORD will name.

You shall also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD,
And a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
Isaiah 62:1-3

a) He fulfills this role as The High Priest

b) He ever lives to intercede for His people

c) There is a glorious plan for Israel in God’s will

4. Our Challenge

a) To become spiritual watchmen

b) To set aside time for intercession

i) For Israel

ii) For the Kingdom of God

iii) For Bethany
