Message: “Made their Lives bitter with Hard bondage” Exodus 1:14

INTRODUCTION

1. The life and deeds of Joseph were forgotten with the passing of time

2. A new Pharaoh arose who refused to acknowledge what Joseph had done

3. He began to enslave the children of Israel

THE REASON FOR ENSLAVING THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we; 10 come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel. 13 So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage—in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.

Exodus 1:8-14

1. Interpretation of the growth of the children of Israel

a) They are more
b) They are mightier
c) They may join the enemy in the event of war
d) They may then leave Egypt
e) They will affect Egypt adversely

2. A wicked Plan drawn up

a) Taskmasters were to be appointed
b) They were to afflict the children of Israel with hard labour
c) They were tasked to do construction work

3. But this Plan failed

a) It did not stop the children of Israel from growing
b) The children of Israel grew mightier

4. A harsher plan was implemented

a) They made the lives of the children of God hard and bitter
b) More and more burdens were added
c) How would the children of God cope?

MORE WICKED PLANS

15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; 16 and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. 18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?”

19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.”

20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. 21 And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.

22 So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

Exodus 1:15-22

1. An order to the midwives

a) They were the ones who helped the women with their deliveries
b) When they see the babies born:
i) If it is a girl, it may live
ii) If it is a boy, it must be killed

2. The disobedience of the midwives

a) They feared God more than the Pharaoh
b) They refused to obey the Pharaoh
c) They did not kill any baby

3. The reason they gave to the Pharaoh

a) The Hebrew women were sturdier
b) The babies were born before they arrived in their homes
c) The Pharaoh could not find fault with the midwives

4. The blessing of the LORD upon the midwives

a) Their work prospered
b) They became successful and wealthy

5. The most wicked of the plans

a) That all the Hebrew parents are to slay their own sons
b) This was a dilemma
i) How could they kill their sons?
ii) But how could they disobey the Pharaoh’s direct command?

CONCLUSION

1. The dream given to Abram was being fulfilled

Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.

2. What would be needed to cope?

a) Faith
b) Courage
c) Endurance

3. The LORD has to come into the picture

a) To protect
b) To deliver
c) To fulfil the other aspect of Abram’s dream

And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
