Text: Exodus 6:1-9

THE CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH LED MOSES TO TURN TO THE LORD (Exodus 5:21-23)

1. Great discouragement experienced

a) Moses and Aaron were blamed
i. The children of Israel blamed Moses and Aaron for making them abhorrent
ii. They were blamed for providing the means to harm the Israelites more
b) Moses struggled with much negativity
i. He assumed that God had brought trouble on the people
ii. He began to question why God sent him
iii. He only saw Pharaoh’s evil deeds continuing despite speaking in God’s name
iv. He impatiently stated that God had not delivered His people

2. Moses needed help to deal with much discouragement

GOD REASSURED MOSES (Exodus 6:1-5)

1. God gave a personal word to Moses

a) This is something Moses shall see
b) What God will do will result in the children of Israel being delivered
c) God predicted how Pharaoh will release them

2. God revealed Himself to Moses in a fresh new way

a) What “LORD” means
i. The Eternal One
ii. The Lord and Master of the Universe
b) A name not made known in the past
i. God had appeared to the patriarchs as God Almighty
ii. But by His name LORD He was not known to them
c) The LORD as One who established His covenant
i. This covenant would include the land of Canaan
ii. God would give them the land of their pilgrimage
iii. The land in which they were strangers

3. God made it known that He never forgot

a) The children of Israel
i. He heard their groaning
ii. He knew they were kept in bondage by the Egyptians
b) His covenant

GOD TAUGHT MOSES WHAT TO SAY TO THE PEOPLE (Exodus 6:6-8)

1. “I am the LORD”

a) The first mention was God revealing Himself to Moses in a fresh new way
b) The second and third mentions served as brackets to the promises God will give
i. Authority
ii. Authentication
iii. Affirmation

2. God’s promises pertaining to their deliverance from Egypt

a) What God said
i. I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians
ii. I will rescue you from their bondage
iii. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments
iv. I will take you as My people
v. I will be your God
b) Outcome
i. The children of Israel shall know that God is the LORD their God
ii. They shall know that He is the One who brought them out of Egypt

3. God’s promises pertaining to the land they will come to

a) God will bring them into the land which He swore to give to the Patriarchs
b) God will give it to them as a heritage

MOSES SPOKE TO THE PEOPLE (Exodus 6:9)

1. So Moses spoke thus to the children of Israel

a) The person of God
b) The power of God
c) The promises of God

2. Unfortunate response of the people

a) They did not heed Moses
b) Reasons
i. Anguish of spirit
ii. Cruel bondage

CONCLUSION

1. The problem of discouragement

a) Anybody can become discouraged
b) Discouragement can bring about much negativity in the heart and mind

2. Faith in God is to be exercised to deal with discouragement

a) Faith in the person of God
b) Faith in the power of God
c) Faith in the promises of God

3. Hardship and challenging circumstances may remain

a) We must be prepared for this
b) Our faith in God must continue to be exercised
