Title: “My servant Moses” Numbers 12:7-8

INTRODUCTION

1. Moses was an outstanding servant of God

2. His ministry for the Lord was huge

a) Facing Pharaoh courageously
b) Instructing the children of Israel tirelessly
c) Interceding for sinful Israel faithfully

A QUARREL AMONG THE LEADERS

1 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married; for he had married an Ethiopian woman.

2 So they said, “Has the LORD indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us also?” And the Lord heard it.

3 (Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.)

Numbers 12:1-3

1. Aaron and Miriam were leaders too

a) Aaron was the high priest
b) Miriam was a prophetess

2. Personal disagreement

a) Aaron and Miriam had an issue with Moses
b) Their younger had remarried and that to an Ethiopian lady
c) They took issue with Moses

3. Disguised discontent

a) Why was Moses God’s spokesman?
b) Were they not spokesmen too?

4. Moses did not argue with them

a) He chose humility
b) “Blessed are the poor in spirit”

GOD’S INTERVENTION

4 Suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the tabernacle of meeting!” So the three came out.

5 Then the LORD came down in the pillar of cloud and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam. And they both went forward.

Numbers 12:4-5

1. God summoned the three siblings

2. He came down from heaven in the pillar of cloud

3. He called Aaron and Miriam to step forward

GOD HONOURED MOSES

6 Then He said,
“Hear now My words:
If there is a prophet among you,
I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision;
I speak to him in a dream.

7 Not so with My servant Moses;
He is faithful in all My house.

8 I speak with him face to face,
Even plainly, and not in dark sayings;
And he sees the form of the LORD.
Why then were you not afraid
To speak against My servant Moses?”

Numbers 12:6-8

1. When God speaks to a prophet

a) He may send a vision
b) He may give a dream

2. When God speaks to Moses

a) God speaks to Moses differently
b) God speaks directly to Moses
i) God speaks to him “face to face”
ii) God speaks plainly to him
c) This was done to set Moses apart from all other servants of God

3. A rebuke to Aaron and Miriam

a) Why were they not showing proper respect?
b) Why were they not afraid to speak against Moses?

CHASTISEMENT OF MIRIAM

9 So the anger of the LORD was aroused against them, and He departed.

10 And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and there she was, a leper.

11 So Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord! Please do not lay this sin on us, in which we have done foolishly and in which we have sinned.

12 Please do not let her be as one dead, whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb!”

Numbers 12:9-12

1. God departed from the Tabernacle in anger

2. Miriam was struck with leprosy

3. Aaron was horrified

4. He spoke to Moses with appropriate humility

a) He called Moses “My Lord”
b) He confessed wrong-doing
i) They had spoken foolishly
ii) They had sinned
c) He pleaded with Moses to seek God’s healing

MOSES’ INTERCESSION

13 So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, “Please heal her, O God, I pray!”

14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, would she not be shamed seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp seven days, and afterward she may be received again.”

15 So Miriam was shut out of the camp seven days, and the people did not journey till Miriam was brought in again.

Numbers 12:13-15

1. Moses pleaded on behalf of Miriam

2. He prayed that she might be healed

3. God’s response

a) Miriam must learn from this lesson
b) If her father had spat on her she would be shamed for seven days
c) Miriam was to be shut out of the Camp for one whole week

RELEVANT LESSONS

1. Never think of ourselves more highly than we should

2. Recognise and honour those whom God has chosen and blessed

3. Beware of sinning with unbridled tongues
