A SETTLED LIFE

1. Noah

2. Three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth Genesis 9:18
And their wives

3. Order of birth

a) Japheth
“Japheth the elder” Genesis 10:21
b) Shem Genesis 9:18
c) Ham
“The younger son” Genesis 9:24

4. They were fruitful indeed Genesis 10

HIDDEN DANGERS

1. For Noah

a) He became a farmer Genesis 9:20a
b) He planted a vineyard Genesis 9:20b
c) He drank of the wine Genesis 9:21a
d) And was drunk Genesis 9:21b

2. The Significance of the New Testament

a) To explain the things that happened in the past
i) As examples 1 Corinthians 10:11a
ii) For our admonition 1 Corinthians 10:11b
b) The danger of thinking that we “stand”
i) We are blessed
ii) We are not wicked
iii) We are all right
iv) We would not fall
c) The danger of “falling”
i) Of Noah becoming drunk
ii) Subsequent drunken behaviour (nakedness)
iii) Unexpected but it happened

ACTIONS TAKEN

1. The response of Ham

a) “He saw the nakedness of his father” Genesis 9:22a
b) “He told his two brothers outside” Genesis 9:22b
c) Should he have done that?

2. The response of Shem and Japheth

a) “They took a garment” Genesis 9:23a
b) “And laid it on both their shoulders” Genesis 9:23b
c) “And went backward” Genesis 9:23c
d) “And covered the nakedness of their father” Genesis 9:23d
e) “And they did not see their father’s nakedness” Genesis 9:23e

CONSEQUENCES

1. Noah’s response

a) He awoke from his wine Genesis 9:24a
b) He found out what had happened Genesis 9:24b

2. Noah’s curse on Ham

a) Cursed be Canaan
i) Canaan was the son of Ham Genesis 9:22a
ii) The sin of the father visited on the son Genesis 9:25a
iii) A servant of servants he shall be
to his brethren Genesis 9:25b
b) Understanding of this “curse”
i) Father and son relationship suffered a terrible hit
ii) Ham showed that he had a mind of a low-born servant
iii) He had dishonoured his father
iv) Noah was at fault too!

3. Noah’s blessing on Shem and Japheth

a) Shem
i) Blessed be the LORD the God of Shem Genesis 9:26a
ii) And may Canaan be his servant Genesis 9:26b
b) Japheth
i) May God enlarge Japheth Genesis 9:27a
ii) And may he dwell in the tents of Shem Genesis 9:27b
iii) And may Canaan be his servant Genesis 9:27c

CHALLENGING LESSONS TO TAKE NOTE OF

1. Danger lies in the best of families

a) Brothers can be different one from the other
b) Relationship of Children and Parents can be endangered

2. Deadly consequences

a) Family relationships can be hurt badly
b) They are sometimes irreparable

3. Dealing with Sin problems

a) Our regard of parents
i) How strong is that regard?
ii) Is there a danger of dishonouring them?
b) A base mind?
i) Do we have a low and base mindset?
ii) Are we in danger of being “accursed?”
c) Do we have a noble mind?
i) We honour our parents
ii) We guard their dignity despite their weaknesses

CONCLUSION

1. Let us take heed that we do not become over-confident that “we stand”

2. Let us recognise that we can “fall”

3. Thank God that He will help us escape sin’s entrapment
