Thank God for our country

Many nations are facing and coping with tremendous challenges and difficulties daily, and our hearts go out to them. At the same time, we have every reason to be thankful to God for what we have been blessed with here in Singapore.

However, we tend to take things for granted and are quick to complain about policies, facilities and services that are less than ideal. In more ways than one, we are “spoilt” through the countless things that have been provided for us when many nations are dealing with bad government, natural disasters and inadequate essentials. As we celebrate National Day, let us take time to be grateful for God’s blessings on our country.

The blessings of God

What are some blessings that we ought to give heartfelt thanksgiving for?

1. Good government

  1. We thank God for a good, clean and visionary government that exercises its powers well.
  2. Singapore would not be where it is if not for our founding fathers, who determined the kind of government that they wanted to be and for subsequent leaders to follow suit.
  3. With a new Prime Minister in place, we hope that good governance will continue.
  4. We also recognise that God’s hand is involved in appointing our leaders (Romans 13:1–4).
  5. God has appointed them to be His ministers to exercise their authority justly and equally.
  6. As we observe how bad governments are destroying their countries, we should be grateful for our leaders and pray for them to have the wisdom to continue to rule well (1 Timothy 2:1–2).

2. Incredible development

  1. Over the years, we have seen and experienced the development and progress of Singapore.
  2. The transformation of Singapore has been truly remarkable, significant and outstanding.
  3. It was an improbable success story growing from a fledgling 3rd-world country to a prospering 1st-world nation.
  4. We thank God for a strong economy, excellent infrastructure, a robust health system and more.
  5. Many things could have gone wrong but God’s hand has been evident in blessing our country from strength to strength to where it is today.

3. Lasting peace

  1. In a time when many parts of the world are at war, we should be thankful for our peace.
  2. Singapore has seen peace in our land for almost 80 years since the end of the Japanese Occupation.
  3. We thank God that we can live a quiet and peaceable life over all these years (1 Timothy 2:2).
  4. As a result, we have the freedom to live godly and reverent lives as we practise our faith.
  5. We are not inhabited in anyway to do the Lord’s work as in other countries.
  6. Let us continue to pray for this peace that we may persist in reaching the lost (1 Timothy 2:3–4).

4. One united people

We thank God for the harmony we have as a people despite differences in race, language and religion. Our harmony can unravel easily as we observe the disharmony, division and disputes in many nations, both large and small. We cannot take our unity for granted but must pray for God to help maintain it.

As we remember the blessings of God poured out on our tiny island, let us give heartfelt thanksgiving and joyful praise to Him. Happy 59th National Day!
