Appreciating The Works Of God

The great work of God
Over these last two weeks, I have been thinking about the works of God. At the anniversary of Bethel IPC, Pastor Charles preached about the works of God and how it should be studied, “The works of the Lord are great, studied by all who have pleasure in them.” (Ps 111:2) The works of God are great and should be considered by all. Yet in reality, many of us do not give enough time to the study the works of God well enough.
I was deeply challenged by the Psalmist and I would like to share with you my thoughts concerning the works of God that are seen both generally and personally. There are three ways in which I’ve seen God work significantly.
The work of God in our country
We thank God for the Lord’s blessings on our country these last 50 years. Through this last election, we know that what has been done for the prosperity and progress of our country will continue. One significant thing that I have noticed through the lead up to and on the day of the elections was that many were praying. We learned to practise what Paul taught Timothy to give priority to praying for our rulers (1 Tim 2:1) and we did. Many prayed with a greater sense of urgency. Did not God answer our prayers? The answer is “Yes”.
The work of God is truly evident and we should appreciate it. For Singapore to be what it is today, I see the work of God in our midst. Let us continue to pray that God will continue to work in our country in the next generation and beyond.
The work of God in our churches
“He has made His wonderful works to be remembered;” (Ps 111:4)
The works of God are meant to be remembered and studied. Over the last couple weeks, both Bethany and Bethel celebrated their 42nd and 21st anniversaries respectively. We can certainly say that God has done a great work in our churches especially as we humbly remember how we all first started as a church. The Lord has shown Himself to be gracious and full of compassion. (Ps 111:4)
Over the next month, our churches in India will also be celebrating IPC India’s 26th Anniversary. We have seen them grow from strength to strength. As we study the work of God in our IPC churches, we cannot but see His great power at work, “He has declared to His people the power of His works,” (Ps 111:6) There is no denying of the power of God. Let us appreciate the power of God at work in our churches.
The work of God in our lives
In a more specific manner, I also see the work of God in my life. Last week, I celebrated my 15th year of being ordained as a pastor…as a minister of the New Covenant. As I remember how I began this journey of being a full time servant, I can certainly see the work of God of transforming my life to what it is today. I thank God for the good work that He has begun in my life so many years ago. (Phil 1:6) God continues to work in my life… “both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” (Phil 2:13) One day, He will faithfully complete that work. (Phil 1:6) Let us thank God for His continuing work in our lives. Let us be challenged to take time to study the works of God both generally and personally. Let us appreciate and give thanks for how great and significant the work of God is in all of our lives.
