The eyes of the Lord

We are living in challenging times. As country after country lockdown their borders due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, should we focus on the negativity of these difficult circumstances? The answer is “No!” What should our focus be? The author of Psalm 33 chose to focus on God. He was going through his share of great challenges like facing a war situation. (Ps 33:16,17) But there were wonderful things that he chose to focus on. Let me highlight one aspect that has brought much encouragement to my heart. The author focused on God, whose eyes are watching over the world. What were some of his thoughts?

God’s eyes are watching over us

1. God watches and cares for us

“The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men. From the place of His dwelling He looks on all the inhabitants of the earth;” (Ps 33:13,14)

God is dwelling high above in heaven. But He is not a distant or uninvolved God. He looks down from heaven and sees each one of the sons of men. God watches over each person carefully with great concern. He knows all that is happening to us and seeks to be involved in our lives by caring for us, “He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works.” (Ps 33:15) God knows what our heart is like and fashions it one by one. He sees and considers our works.

During these times, God guided our hearts to show love and concern for our church brethren, especially for the elderly as we suspended our church ministries. He knows the works that Pastor Charles and the rest of us are doing as we continue to serve the Lord in ministering to the brethren in Bethany and to our fellow brethren overseas. In the world, we also see all the good work that is being done in Singapore and all over the world where lives are being saved or protected. God continues to watch over and care for all of us in the world.

2. God watches and extends His mercy to us

“Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy,” (Ps 33:18)

This is such a beautiful description of the Lord watching over us. The Lord’s eyes are looking out for us. His eyes see us in our time of trouble and He seeks to extend His mercy to us. God is a merciful God. How is His mercy manifested? The author wrote, “To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.” (Ps 33:19) The Lord shows His mercy through His deliverance. He also shows His mercy by protecting us, “He is our help and our shield.” (Ps 33:20) When God looks after us with His loving eyes, and when He sees our needs, His mercy is specially extended to us.

Our response

How should we respond? Let us fear the Lord. He watches over those who fear Him. Let us hope in the Lord and His mercy. He watches over those who have faith and hope in Him rather than the things of the world. (Ps 33:16,17) Let us also seek to rejoice in the Lord with our heart. (Ps 33:21) We have every reason to rejoice. When the Lord shows us His mercy, we should respond with joy. Let us continue to pray for further mercy to be given, “Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, just as we hope in You.” (Ps 33:22) While we have experienced the Lord’s mercy thus far, let us continue to look to Him in prayer with hope and to ask for greater mercy every day. Let us be challenged to look to God as One who watches over us lovingly and to hope in His mercy joyfully.
