Discovering The Abundant Life

Understanding the abundant life

What is the abundant life? The Lord Jesus taught this wonderful promise, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

1. The Lord Jesus gave this promise as the good shepherd (John 10:11)

2. He seeks to give life to all who are His sheep

3. It is not about having physical abundance

4. As His sheep, we are meant to live our lives in spiritual abundance

5. There is a richness of life that the Lord seeks to give

Let us discover this abundant life.

Commencing this abundant life  

How do we begin to experience this abundant life?

1. Human life

a. We begin life when we are born

b. It is natural to seek to live and develop our life physically

2. Born again

a. When we have faith in Christ, we are spiritually born again (John 3:3)

b. We are born of the Spirit of God (John 3:5)

c. We become part of the kingdom of God (John 3:3,5)

d. Through the Spirit of God, we have a new, spiritual life

e. It is commencement of the eternal life God has promised (John 3:16)

A continuing discovery of this abundant life

How do we discover this abundant life further?

1. Through the Word

“The Words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:63)

a. The Words of the Lord Jesus are to be understood spiritually

i. God teaches us as we hear and learn through the Words of the Lord Jesus (John 6:45)

ii. We gain deeper insights as our heart and mind are opened to His Word

b. The Words of the Lord Jesus are life-giving

i. Through the Word, we would experience a life that is spiritually abundant

ii. It is a significant life of joy, strength, hope and so much more

2. Through the Spirit

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.” (John 6:63)

a. The power of the Spirit works through the Words of the Lord to give us life

b. The Spirit is involved in making us come alive and thrive

c. The flesh represents the carnality of life…it leads to futility

3. Through the application of faith

a. Believe with certainty in the Lord’s promise of giving us an abundant life

b. Have faith in the Words of the Lord Jesus that they are spirit and life

c. Trust that the Spirit of God will actively work in making our life more abundant

Let us appreciate and not take for granted the abundant life that the Lord has given to us. Let us be challenged to discover and experience this abundant life through the Lord’s Word.
