Looking forward to our 21st YAG Retreat
I hope you are excited about being at our 21st YAG Retreat commencing this Friday. We have about 180 people signed up. This is indeed a great response and we are glad that so many are taking the time to learn more about the theme of our Retreat… “The Great Commission.”
How should we understand “The Great Commission?” How is it relevant to our lives today? These are pertinent questions that we should ask ourselves as we prepare for this important Retreat.
One key aspect of the Great Commission is the work of discipleship. The Lord Jesus sought to first call and then to teach His disciples in order for them to fulfill this awesome work.
The full challenge of discipleship
The Lord Jesus called Simon Peter and his brother, Andrew to become fishers of men, “Follow Me and I will make you become fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17) The Lord also called Matthew the Tax collector to be His disciple, “Follow Me” (Mark 2:14) What does it really mean to be a disciple?
The Lord Jesus taught the full challenge of discipleship,”When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 8:34) The calling of discipleship involves denying ourselves of the things of the world. It also involved taking up our cross which means to endure hardship as a disciple of the Lord. Let us be challenged to have a full understanding of the challenge of discipleship as we seek to follow the Lord.
The personal work of the Lord in us
“Follow Me and I will make you become fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17)
In following the Lord, we would see the personal involvement of the Lord Jesus in our life. He would begin to do a new work in us. His power would begin to transform us. He will do the work of training His disciples with His teachings and guidance.
There will be things to be corrected along the way. There will be new things to learn as He gives us many examples to study and to emulate. The challenge is for us to become more and more like the Lord Jesus Himself.
The potential to become fishers of men
“Follow Me and I will make you become fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17)
Through this work of discipleship, we can become fishers of men. In being fully trained, Simon Peter and Andrew would have every potential to become good fishers of men. (Luke 6:40)
We too would have the same potential…to see our life becoming of greater significance and making a world of difference to many!
As we prepare ourselves for the YAG Retreat, let us seek to develop a deeper understanding of the Great Commission and learn how we can become fishers of men through being disciples of the Lord.
