Finding inspiration

There are different ways of finding inspiration as we seek the Lord. One way is through life experiences. God said to Israel, “Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.” (Isaiah 51:1) Israel went through hard times and the Lord had hewn her from the rock…dug her out from the hole of the pit. Lessons learnt through those challenging times gave inspiration. Israel could also look to good examples such as Abraham and Sarah for inspiration (Isaiah 51:2). From one man, the nation of Israel arose. But our greatest inspiration is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Let us look to His example for inspiration.

1. The vision of the Lord Jesus

  1. The Lord Jesus is our greatest example of a true Servant of the Lord.
  2. He set the example of how we ought to serve God and not just in fulfilling our task.
  3. His mouth was like a sharp sword…wise in all His words (Isaiah 49:2).
  4. The Lord was hidden and trained for 30 years before He was revealed as a polished shaft (Isaiah 49:2).
  5. As the Lord’s Servant, the Messiah sought to glorify God (Isaiah 49:3).
  6. The mission of His service was to gather Israel back to God (Isaiah 49:5).
  7. He found strength in His God (Isaiah 49:5).
  8. On the other hand, Israel complained that they had laboured in vain and had no more strength. This was in total contrast to how the Messiah served (Isaiah 49:4).
  9. The challenge is for us to be inspired by the vision of the Lord Jesus in how He served.

2. Finding daily inspiration as the Lord Jesus did

“The Lord God has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned.” (Isaiah 50:4)

  1. The Lord Jesus was able to serve with a great sense of strength and confidence.
  2. He found daily inspiration as He sought God each morning.
  3. God specially woke Him long before dawn.
  4. He spoke to Him and gave Him the knowledge that He needed.
  5. The Messiah had a trained and eager ear ready to listen to His Father.
  6. He was given a special word, and with the tongue of the learned, He sought to encourage the brethren.
  7. As the Messiah listened, He was not rebellious but was obedient to God’s Word (Isaiah 50:5).
  8. Let us be challenged by the Lord’s example to be daily inspired by the Word of God.

3. Seeking the thoughts of God

“Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.” (Isaiah 55:6)

The challenge is to seek the Lord while He may be found. We should learn to forsake all the personal and wrong thoughts we have (Isaiah 55:7). As we return to our God, we ought to seek His higher thoughts (Isaiah 55:8). God’s thoughts are significantly higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8,9). The challenge is for us to focus on the Lord’s thoughts and words…giving us the inspiration we need. The best thoughts we can have are of the Lord Jesus as our suffering Servant (Isaiah 53). He bore our sins and paid the penalty. Through His suffering, He made it all possible for us to seek and find God. Let us be challenged and inspired by the Lord Jesus to seek God with all our heart, mind and strength.
