Joy In The Midst Of Trials

The problem of a wrong attitude
When we face life’s difficulties, how we respond reveals our attitude, whether right or wrong. We tend to react negatively as we are filled with fear and worry. We would have the wrong attitude of feeling despondent and finding no joy. These trials may even cause us to become angry with life and the people around us.
Choosing the right attitude in the trials of life
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,” (James 1:2)
- This is a command or admonishment for us to “consider, reckon”.
- We are to reckon joy as the proper attitude to face our trials.
- This is not an easy choice to make.
- Not a natural attitude to have.
- It is hard when we are overwhelmed with pain and uncertainty.
- Yet choosing to have joy is Biblical, appropriate and correct.
- It would reflect the development and maturing of our faith.
Knowledge of the result of the testing of our faith
“Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” (James 1:3)
- The challenge of considering it all joy is related to our knowledge.
- We find joy when we know and understand more deeply about the testing of our faith.
- Our faith in God is being tested through the trials of life.
- It is meant to test our faith’s quality and genuineness.
- It is also meant to help us grow a more robust faith as we learn to apply it.
- It is for the sake of our faith that we are tested.
As I pondered these vital thoughts, I was moved to write this poem as a reflection of my growing understanding of my faith in facing the trials of life.
Joy in the midst of trials
Whenever we experience the diverse trials of life
We tend to face them with fear, worry and strife
Our hearts and minds can be overwhelmed with pain
Foolishly and angrily, we look at life and others to blame.
The challenge is given for us to have the right attitude
No matter the circumstances, let us find joy and gratitude
It is an approach that is not easy to personally apply
But it is possible with the grace that God supplies
The testing of our faith is meant for our good
The things that result would be our proof
It produces perseverance as part of our growing
A perfecting work that will lead to our maturing
We have every reason to be uplifted and rejoice
Daily we need to make this attitude our choice
Faith is not just about hoping for the trial to end
It is to find joy in our journey as part of God’s plan
James 1:2–4
