The love of Christ
During this Easter season, we have come to deeply appreciate the love of Christ all over again. We have seen the love of Christ through His life, His death and His resurrection. (Rom 8:34) He is now seating on the right hand of God and He lovingly intercedes on our behalf. (Rom 8:34) We thank God for the love of Christ demonstrated to us so sacrificially and so profoundly. Let us greatly appreciate the love of Christ.
The certainty of love
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Rom 8:35) This question is rhetorical. There is no need for an answer as it is most apparent. There is nothing that would separate us from the love of Christ. We can have absolute certainty in the love of Christ.
However, there will be times when we will have to go through difficulties that may cause us to doubt the love of Christ. Paul wrote, “Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” (Rom 8:35) Paul had to go through these challenges for the sake of Christ. He recognised that these difficulties are age-old problems as he referred to the Psalmist, “As it is written: “For Your sake, we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”” (Rom 8:36, Ps 44:22) We have to expect such opposition and challenges. However, they should not in any way cause us to doubt the Lord’s love for us. Let us be sure of the Lord’s love for us always.
A love that makes us more than conquerors
“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Rom 8:37)
The Greek word for “more than conquerors” is “hupernikao”. It is made up of two words. The first word is “huper” which means “hyper, above”. The second word is “nikao” means “victory, conqueror”. (The brand “nike” is drawn from this word.) We are meant to be above conquerors…more than conquerors. This is what our Christian life is meant to be. Whatever it is that we have to face in life, let us learn to be more than conquerors. It is through Christ that we can become more than conquerors. The love of Christ has been given to us…demonstrated to us. His love should inspire us…to have the power to overcome. Let us depend on the love of Christ to make us more than conquerors.
A love that persuades
“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 8:38,39)
The word “persuaded” in Greek is “peitho” which means to “convince, persuade”. Being persuaded involves the mind. The mind must think through things and be convinced. Being a conqueror requires a fully persuaded mindset. We must be confident that nothing will separate us from the love of God. Not only that, our hearts should also become persuaded that we are more than conquerors. We are moved in our heart by the love of God.
Paul used the Greek perfect tense for the word “persuaded” which means that he stands absolutely persuaded. That is why Paul was able to declare, “I am persuaded”. The love of God must fill our heart and mind…that we can become confident that we are more than conquerors. The love of God is something that must be so real that it becomes a driving force in our life. It drives us to become more than conquerors over all of life challenges. Let us be strengthened by the pulsating love of God to be more than conquerors.
