Entering the Lunar New Year with joy
As we commence another Lunar New Year, our hearts should be filled with joy. We ought to begin the year on a strong note of rejoicing and confidence. How can we learn to find joy? In Psalm 21, King David wrote of how he had found joy for the following reasons.
1. The strength of the Lord
“The king shall have joy in Your strength, O Lord;” (Psalm 21:1)
- The Lord strengthened David to fight his tough battles with his enemies.
- He gained great victories repeatedly through the Lord’s strength.
2. The salvation of the Lord
“And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!” (Psalm 21:1)
- David was in danger due to the threat of the many enemies who sought to kill him.
- But the Lord would deliver David each time he was afflicted.
3. The Lord’s answer to prayer
“You have given him his heart’s desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips.” (Psalm 21:2)
- The Lord answered David’s humble prayer of petition.
- God gave him his heart’s desire and blessed him with His deliverance.
These were some reasons for King David to rejoice. Let us follow his example of finding heartfelt joy as we begin the Lunar New Year.
The richest blessings of the Lord
David laid out all the rich blessings that God had given to him. These are some of them for us to appreciate.
1. The blessings of goodness (Psalm 21:3)
- The Lord met David with the blessing of His incredible goodness.
- His goodness was reflected in all He gave to David…in everything provided for him.
2. Long life (Psalm 21:4)
- David was blessed with a long life despite facing the threat of death in his battles.
- We thank God for blessing us with life each year…preserving us despite life’s afflictions.
3. Glorious salvation (Psalm 21:5)
- The glory of God was manifested in the salvation He gave to David.
- Let us see and appreciate the rich glory of God in the blessing of His salvation.
4. Most blessed forever (Psalm 21:6)
- David always considered himself most blessed and never took anything for granted.
- We should see ourselves as most blessed too as we are indeed blessed beyond measure.
5. Exceedingly glad with the Lord’s presence (Psalm 21:6)
- David’s most treasured blessing was the presence of God, who gave him exceeding joy.
- We, too, are richly blessed with the presence of God, which should bring us great joy.
Facing the Lunar New Year with trust
“For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved.” (Psalm 21:7)
King David had a close relationship with the Lord that resulted in the Lord blessing him exceedingly. Why was this? It was due to David’s absolute trust in the Lord. He did not rely on himself as king. He depended on the mercy of the Most High God in facing his difficulties. Let us be challenged to place complete trust in the Lord, His mercy and all His blessings so that we may not be moved as we face the harsh realities of life ahead.
