Mourning The Loss Of A Great Leader

Heartfelt sorrow for the passing away of the Late Mr Lee Kuan Yew
When I heard of the sad news on Monday morning that Mr Lee had passed on, my heart was filled with sorrow and I wept. Mr Lee had played a profound role in our lives here in Singapore as our founding father and former Prime Minister. His leadership and vision had made a tremendous difference to the prosperity and progress of our nation.
If we were to just look around us, we recognise how Mr Lee had a part to play in almost everything that we see….in initiating and developing many areas of the Singapore lifestyle. From the water we receive, to the greenery that we see around us, to the buildings that stand towering over us, Mr Lee had always sought to improve our life here in Singapore…making it into what it is today. We truly owe a tremendous debt and gratitude to Mr Lee.
Appointed by God to be His minister
During the family camp, there was question that was asked about how we should see governments. Pastor pointed us to the Apostle Paul’s understanding of the leader of a country. Paul wrote, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” (Rom 13:1)
Our leaders are appointed by God. He had a hand in choosing those who are appointed. They are also seen as God’s ministers, “For he is God’s minister to you for good.” (Rom 13:4) The word “minister” means “servant”. They serve God in ensuring justice is maintained to those who are evil and to those who are good.
We thank God for appointing Mr Lee Kuan Yew as His minister…to serve as a leader of Singapore. We are indeed blessed to be given such a leader who had for much of his life served the nation. Without Mr Lee, Singapore might have been a very different country today. God had a hand in the raising and appointing of Mr Lee, and Singapore has prospered because of his vision. Le us give thanks to our Great God for giving to us such an amazing leader.
Praying for our leaders and country
“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” (1 Tim 2:1,2)
A fitting response to Mr Lee’s death was one of prayer.
1. We want to pray and give thanks to God for the life of Mr Lee and for his invaluable work in building our nation
2. Let us intercede on behalf of our present Prime Minister, his family and the whole country for comfort as we go through this week of mourning.
3. Let us pray for our leaders as they continue to be God’s ministers, that they may rule with wisdom from God and to continue the legacy that Mr Lee had left behind.
Let us be challenged to pray for Singapore in the years ahead.
