Seek the LORD

A proper understanding of seeking God

Last Saturday, at the Pre-camp Special, we had our first taste of Family Camp. We learnt that we must properly understand what it truly means to seek God (Isaiah 55:6). Many of us tend to assume that we know what it means, but we were challenged to review and rethink how we should approach the Lord. It was enlightening as the Lord’s Word revealed the correct understanding of seeking Him. The challenge is to think more Biblically rather than based on our own knowledge and understanding. Here are some thoughts for us to consider.

1. Perception

“The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God.” (Psalm 14:2)

  1. David wrote about God’s perception of all men.
  2. He observed and concluded that there was no one seeking God.
  3. All had turned away from God and became corrupt.
  4. We live in a world that has attracted and drawn many astray.
  5. Many do not have any knowledge of God and, therefore, seek to reject Him.

2. Prediction

“When you beget children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, and act corruptly and make a carved image in the form of anything, and do evil in the sight of the Lord your God to provoke Him to anger.” (Deuteronomy 4:25)

  1. Moses knew what the people were like, how prone they were to sin against God.
  2. He gave Israel words of prediction as to what they would do as they enter the Promised Land.
  3. When they had grown old, they would act corruptly and turn to idolatry.
  4. Israel would do what was evil in the eyes of the Lord.
  5. This predictive word served as a warning to the people, and it may or may not be fulfilled.
  6. But Moses understood the people’s tendencies, and his prediction was proven to be true.

3. Prescriptive

“But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deuteronomy 4:29)

  1. The Lord gave a prescriptive word as to how we are to seek Him.
  2. When Israel was judged and scattered to other nations, they would learn to seek God again.
  3. They would learn to seek God with all their heart and with all their soul.
  4. Only then would Israel be able to find God and relate to Him again.
  5. This is the Lord’s prescribed word, and Israel had to learn to do it accordingly.
  6. Let us be challenged to learn to seek God with all of our heart and soul.

4. Prophetic

“But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” (Jeremiah 31:33)

God gave a prophecy concerning the New Covenant, which He would fulfil. As part of the New Covenant, God would put His law in our minds and write it on our hearts. This is something that we can experience as we seek the Lord. The Lord will be our God, and we will be part of His special people. Let us be challenged to seek the Lord with this new understanding and find a deeper relationship with Him.
