Seeking God amidst difficulties
When we are faced with difficult circumstances in life, how would we respond? The challenge is for us to seek God. This was something that David had to learn as he encountered severe problems, “O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1) David was running away from King Saul and he was in the wilderness. The harsh wilderness was a dry and thirsty land. It reflected what he felt deep within. David struggled not only with physical dryness but also spiritual dryness. Thus, his soul was thirsty…filled with weariness and discouragement.
The wisdom in seeking God
- David was wise to seek the Lord, the most logical thing to do.
- No matter what time of the day, he sought the Lord when necessary.
- David practised seeking the Lord in the morning (Psalm 63:1).
- He also sought the Lord during the night season: “When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches.” (Psalm 63:6)
- When David was unable to sleep, he would seek the Lord for His comfort and peace.
- We, too, may end up having soul drynessas we face various difficult circumstances.
- A wise option for us is to seek the Lord.
The worth of seeking God
1. Seeking God is of great worth
“So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory. Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,” (Psalm 63:2,3)
- David looked for God in His sanctuary, which symbolised His presence.
- He saw the Lord’s great power and majestic glory.
- David also saw God’s lovingkindness…how He expressed love in His kindness.
- His lovingkindness is seen in all His blessings, like His protection.
- His lovingkindness is better than life, something of greater worth than the things of life.
- Let us appreciate the great worth of seeking God.
2. Seeking God is to be with Him
- To seek God is to express a desire to be in His presence.
- David would seek God, meditate on Him and reflect on what He had done for him (Psalm 63:6).
- God was David’s help and protection…David was under the shadow of His wings (Psalm 63:7).
- His soul followed close behind God and he was not alone (Psalm 63:8).
3. Seeking God is to be spiritually satisfied (Psalm 63:5)
- As good food provides physical satisfaction, the Lord gives spiritual satisfaction.
- David’s soul hunger and thirst were spiritually satisfied and quenched.
- There is great value in seeking the Lord.
Wonderful responses
What should our response be? One wonderful response would be to praise the Lord (Psalm 63:3,4). Having a deeper appreciation of our great and loving God, our hearts would overflow with thanksgiving and praise. Another wonderful response would be to rejoice in the Lord (Psalm 63:5). We would find joy in what we say and do. As we face life’s difficulties, let us be challenged to make the wise and worthwhile choice of seeking the Lord.
