Deliverance from the challenges of life
The Psalmist David wrote Psalm 34 as he reflected on a difficult time in his life when he experienced the deliverance of God. As King Saul sought to kill David, he ran into Philistine territory and hid with King Achish (1 Samuel 21:10–15). But when Achish heard that he was a great warrior, David feared for his life. He deceptively feigned madness before Achish and was driven out. David managed to escape. His act of deceit was not honourable. But David reviewed the incident and remembered the valuable insights and lessons he had learnt. David had to go through tough challenges. All kinds of fears gripped him (Psalm 34:4). Troubles plagued him. But God delivered David from all his difficulties.
Testifying of the Lord’s deliverance
- A personal testimony (Psalm 34:4)
- David sought the Lord for His wonderful deliverance.
- He understood that the Lord would hear and answer his prayer.
- The Lord did deliver him from all his fears.
- Citing other testimonies (Psalm 34:5,6)
- All who sought the Lord would have radiant faces as He would bless them.
- The cries of the poor man would be heard and the Lord would deliver him from trouble.
These testimonies demonstrate that God would give His deliverance to anyone who genuinely seeks Him.
Appreciating the deliverance of God
This is what God would do in His deliverance of His people.
- The protection of His angels (Psalm 34:7)
- God has His angels to do His bidding in encamping around those who fear Him.
- They would protect and deliver His people from all kinds of evil and enemies.
- The eyes of the Lord (Psalm 34:15)
- The Lord is watching over His righteous people.
- He gives attention to their lives and ensures their protection.
- The ears of the Lord (Psalm 34:15)
- God is sensitive to the cries and pleas of His people.
- Out of His grace and mercy, He would hear and answer.
- He would respond to their need for deliverance.
Those whom God will deliver
David also recognised that the Lord’s deliverance was given to those who lived for Him.
- Those who fear and give reverence to the Lord (Psalm 34:7,9,11).
- The Lord would bless those who place their trust in Him (Psalm 34:8,22).
- Those who live in righteousness (Psalm 34:15,17,19).
- Those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit (Psalm 34:18).
Seeking the deliverance of the Lord
In facing the adverse circumstances of life, we recognise our great need for the Lord’s deliverance. Many fears can grip our life, such as losing our job or facing an uncertain future. Troubles can plague us. But the Lord promises to deliver us if we call out to Him. Our challenge is to live our lives according to His ways. Let us be challenged to seek the grace and mercy of the Lord so that we may be delivered from all our fears and troubles.
