Counting our blessings
A Blessed and Happy Lunar New Year! This year, due to the government’s COVID-19 measures, we will not be celebrating the Lunar New Year as we used to, whether in church or in our homes. Even though the times are tough, we have every reason to celebrate as we stand at the threshold of the Lunar New Year.
Let us be challenged to give thanks as we count our blessings. King David wrote that we should not forget all His benefits (Ps 103:2). David highlighted a list of these blessings, “Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.” (Ps 103:3,4) He appreciated how the Lord continued to bless him. Let us be challenged to count our blessings.
1. Blessings to us as a church
We thank God for blessing and keeping us this past year. I remember that it was about a year ago that we suspended all our usual church worship services and switched to online messages. Presently, we thank God that some of our ministries have resumed and the Lord continues to demonstrate His lovingkindness and mercies in keeping and watching over us.
Last Saturday, we commenced a new ministry. The Youth Worship was attended by close to a hundred youths. We thank God for this new development where the worship and message are catered to the young people. It is exciting to see them being blessed by this new ministry.
2. Blessings to us as individuals
The Lord has also blessed us and our families. I truly thank God for healing my mom, and she could return home. It is truly out of the grace and mercy that the Lord blessed my mom with healing. During Christmas and New Year’s Day, my mom had to be in the hospital. Now, I thank God that she can celebrate the Lunar New Year at home. Even though this is the first time that we will be having our reunion dinner without my dad, and we will miss him, we are truly grateful as a family that we can celebrate it with Mom.
The Lord’s provision has also been very real. Due to my mom’s weakened health, we decided that she needed a helper to stay with her. With the COVID-19 situation, we were told that it would be very difficult to find a helper with the appropriate experience of looking after the elderly. It may even take months. We thank God that, within a short time, He has provided Mom with an experienced helper. It is truly by the grace and mercy of the Lord that our prayers have been answered. I stand in awe of the Lord’s provision and blessings.
A response from the soul
I bless the Lord for all that He is: merciful, gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy (Ps 103:8). His mercy is so great that it is as high as the heavens (Ps 103:11). I bless His holy name from within my soul (Ps 103:1). He is truly deserving of our utmost praise.
As we appreciate all these blessings, let us be challenged to walk worthy of the Lord’s blessings. Let us give time to bless the Lord’s name, for He is worthy. We should be challenged to fear the Lord, in reverence of His holy name (Ps 103:11, 13, 17). Let us be challenged to remember His commandments and do them (Ps 103:18). As we celebrate the Lunar New Year, let us be challenged to focus on the Lord and count the manifold blessings that He has showered upon our lives.
