The Focus Of Christmas

Keeping a proper focus
As Christmas draws closer, we want to set our focus right. Many tend to lose focus by dwelling on the physical aspects of Christmas such as shopping for presents and feasting. While these things are valid, we do not want to be distracted by them to the extent that we lose our focus on the true meaning of Christmas. Our focus should be set on the Lord Jesus and the purpose of His coming to earth on that first Christmas. Its significance should not be lost amidst the hustle and bustle of Christmas. The Lord Jesus came as the Servant of the Lord to fulfil His great plan for us.
1. Christ as the covenant to the people
“I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, and will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, as a light to the Gentiles,” (Isaiah 42:6)
1. The different covenants in the Old Testament were limited
- God made these covenants with different persons or groups.
- From the Noahic Covenant to the Davidic Covenant, God created these covenants for various purposes.
- But all these covenants were limited.
- They were not meant to be applied to all.
2. Christ came as the New Covenant for all
- The Lord Jesus was given as the New Covenant.
- It would supersede the Sinaitic Covenant.
- It would be a very different covenant.
- There would not be a limitation as it is meant for all who believe in Christ.
- The features of the New Covenant would include God putting His law into our minds and writing it upon our hearts rather than for us to follow a set of laws (Jeremiah 31:31–34).
- He will be our God and we will be His people.
- The Lord Jesus became the Mediator of the New Covenant (Hebrews 9:15).
- Through the shedding of His blood, the Lord Jesus brought about the cleansing of our sins and obtained eternal redemption for all of us (Hebrews 9:14–15).
Let us focus on the Lord Jesus who has everything that we need for salvation and faith.
2. Christ came to open blind eyes
“To open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house.” (Isaiah 42:7)
- There were many who were physically blind.
- But the Lord Jesus came to open the eyes of those who were not only physically blind but also spiritually blind.
- Once, the Lord Jesus sought to heal a blind man at Bethsaida (Mark 8:22–29).
- He touched him and the blind man was only able to see men as trees walking.
- The Lord gave a second touch and the blind man was able to see clearly both physically and spiritually.
We, too, need our eyes to be opened, to have a second touch by the Lord, and to see Him for all that He is. Our eyes also ought to be opened to see the needs of the spiritually blind.
Let us be challenged to seek the Lord for His healing hands upon us so that we may see clearly. Let us be challenged to focus on the Lord Jesus and to emulate His ways this Christmas.
