Sensing the glory of God
It has been exciting to learn about sensing the glory of God. Pastor Charles taught us at the beginning of the month that we should use our senses to comprehend the glory of God. It was an enlightening word as it opened up a new vista as to how we should understand the glory of God. While we recognise that we should see and understand the glory of God, to use all of our senses, such as our hearing, our taste, our feelings and our spirit, is something new and refreshing. It gives us a new approach as to how we should understand and respond to the glory of God that is revealed to us.
A new approach to sensing the glory of God
David was someone who understood the glory of God. He wrote about it in one of his many treasured psalms. With this new approach, it helps us to appreciate how David also meant for us to use our many senses to discover the glory of God.
The glory of God in creation
Creation is one way in which the glory of God is revealed. He wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” (Ps 19:1) We are to see the glory of God in creation. However, there are other ways to appreciate the glory of God in creation.
1. To hear the glory of God…“Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.” (Ps 19:2,3)
The voice of creation utters things that reveal to us knowledge. We are to hear the glory of God through the voice of creation.
2. To feel the glory of God…“In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race.”
(Ps 19:4,5)
The sun is compared to a bridegroom coming out of his chamber. It also rejoices like a strong man to run its race. There is the joy that the sun exudes. The glory of the sun, of creation, is to be felt. These are just new ways in which we can sense the glory of God in creation.
The glory of God in His Word
Another way in which God reveals His glory is through the law of the Lord, the Word of God. How may we sense the glory of God in His Word?
- The soul senses the glory of God. The Word of God is perfect that it converts the soul. (Ps 19:7) We can sense the glory of God at the level of the soul, of the spirit.
- The mind understands the glory of God as the Word of God gives wisdom to the mind. (Ps 19:7)
- The heart feels the glory of God as the Word is right and brings joy to the heart
(Ps 19:8) - The eyes can see the glory of God as the Word gives enlightenment to see spiritually. (Ps 19:8)
- The spirit senses the glory of God in fearing Him and His Word…which is clean and endures forever. His judgments are also to be feared. (Ps 19:9)
These are just some ways in how we can obtain a deeper understanding of the glory of God in His Word. Let us truly appreciate the glory of God with our senses, whether it is revealed in creation or the Word of God. Let us be challenged to sense the Lord’s glory in this refreshing, new approach.
