Challenging times
We live in troubled times. Wars continue to rage and the global economy is facing dire circumstances. Amidst these challenges, everyone is seeking to look out for himself. People tend to put themselves first…at the expense of others.
As we look forward to remembering the death of the Lord Jesus, we see a very different spirit in Him as He sought to fulfil God’s plan for Him. It was not about Himself but what His Father had willed for Him. There is much that we can appreciate and follow as we behold the Lord Jesus and what He sought to do.
Behold the Lamb of God
1. Selfless Sacrifice
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”” (John 1:29)
- John the Baptist identified the Lord Jesus as the “Lamb of God”.
- In the ancient days, lambs were sacrificed for the atonement of sins.
- This was the “Paschal Lamb” that was sacrificed during the Jewish Passover.
- The Lord Jesus became the spiritual “Paschal Lamb”…the sacrificial “Lamb of God”.
- He gave Himself as a sacrifice, not for His own sake but for the sake of the world.
- He came to take away the sins of the world.
- The Lord’s spirit of sacrifice was totally selfless and self-denying.
- This was done out of a heart of love for the world.
2. Profound Suffering
“He was oppressed and He was afflicted…He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,” (Isaiah 53:7)
- The penalty for sin is death (Romans 6:23).
- The Lord Jesus took our place by suffering and dying on the cross for us.
- He had to go through unthinkable and intense pain and shame.
- He was oppressed mentally, emotionally and physically.
- The Lord’s enemies afflicted Him with evil words, brutal blows and intense violence.
- He experienced indescribable pain and suffering for our soul’s need.
- The Lord could have chosen comfort and ease…just as the world would choose.
- But He chose to go through profound pain and suffering for the sake of all.
3. Resolute Silence
“Yet He opened not His mouth…And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.” (Isaiah 53:7)
- In His suffering, the Lord Jesus remained silent and did not speak against His enemies.
- He was like a docile lamb that was about to be slaughtered.
- He bore the pain and suffering silently and resolutely.
- Often, when we are faced with hostilities, we tend to react and speak out against people.
- We would seek to complain about the ill-treatment that we have received.
- But the Lord Jesus chose to be resolutely silent as He faced His extreme difficulties.
What an amazing and loving Lord and Saviour we have! Let us behold and appreciate the “Lamb of God” who redeemed us from our sins. Let us be challenged to follow the example of the Lord Jesus and His spirit in fulfilling God’s plan and will.
