Facing our “high hills”
As we journey in our life and service for the Lord, there will be times when we will face “high hills” that will be difficult, demanding and draining to climb. Let us ask ourselves, “Do we have the faith to climb these “high hills”?”
The Prophet Habakkuk learnt a vital lesson on faith from God, “Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him. But the just shall live by faith.” (Hab 2:4) What does it mean to be “the just”? The just stands in contrast to the proud who has faith in himself and his soul is not upright. The just humbly places his faith in God and seeks to live a life of faith and righteousness. The challenge is not only for us to move forward but also upwards…to reach beyond our present level of knowledge and faith. Let us seek to climb our “high hills” with faith.
When everything seems to fail
“Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; though the labour of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls–” (Habakkuk 3:17)
- There were different struggles that Habakkuk had to face.
- God warned of the impending judgment to come to Judah.
- There would be war and great devastation that would come to the land.
- Pestilence and afflictions would bring great suffering.
- All the fruit trees would not be fruitful.
- Many crops would fail.
- There would come a real lack of food and supplies.
- These were the problems that Habakkuk had to face and climb.
The challenge is to find the faith to climb higher when everything seems to fail.
The challenge of climbing our “high hills” with faith
1. Faith and strength…“The Lord God is my strength;” (Habakkuk 3:19)
- Habakkuk learnt to have faith in the Lord’s strength to climb higher.
- He knew that only the Lord’s strength could sustain him as he climbed up.
- God gives the grace and power to overcome the challenges of climbing.
- With our strength, we are limited and not as strong as we think.
- But with the Lord’s strength, we can climb far higher than we think.
2. Faith and hind feet…“He will make my feet like deer’s feet,” (Habakkuk 3:19)
- We can have faith in the Lord to strengthen our feet as the deer’s.
- Deer have strong hind feet that propel them up steep slopes.
- They have certainty of grip when moving upwards.
- Let us trust the Lord to strengthen our feet to climb our “high hills”.
3. Faith to climb…“And He will make me walk on my high hills.” (Habakkuk 3:19)
- Climbing our “high hills” can be strenuous, stressful and a real struggle.
- But we need not fear the challenges of climbing further up to the next level.
- As we have faith in the Lord’s strength and understand how He can strengthen us, we will be able to walk, climb up and overcome the challenges of life and ministry.
No matter the circumstances, we can rejoice in the Lord and His salvation (Hab 3:18). Let us be challenged to find strength and joy in the Lord to climb our “high hills”.
